Are air fresheners toxic?

Febreze

A plug-in air freshener contained more than 20 different volatile organic compounds, with more than one-third classified as toxic or hazardous under federal laws. Even air fresheners called “organic,” “green,” or with “essential oils” emitted hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens.

Air Fresheners interfere with your ability to smell by releasing nerve-deadening agents or coating nasal passages with an oil film, usually methoxychlor, which is a pesticide that accumulates in fat cells.  Known toxic chemicals found in an air freshener are formaldehyde, a highly toxic, known carcinogen, and penol.  When phenol touches your skin it can cause it to swell, burn, peel and break out in hives.

The following smell test is proof positive of the POWER OF STEAM to eliminate, not mask, nasty odors.

Place a cloth into a stinky tennis shoe. Add steam via the steam nozzle for 20 – 30 seconds. Germs that caused the odor are dead.  Shoes smell great.
